One of the many city parks in Savannah, GA
Located within an hour, either by road or by cruise, Savannah is another must for visitors to Hilton Head.
Like Charleston, Savannah has a rich and colorful past, going back as far as 1733, when it was founded by the British General James Oglethorpe - a name that is still famous in Savannah today.
The Hostess City of the South, as it is known, has a large historic district, with old-fashioned squares between blocks where visitors can take a seat and rest in the shade of the live oaks, dripping with Spanish moss.
There are architectural treasures galore, and many of the houses are available for tours - some may need to be booked in advance, so check ahead of time - and one of the best ways to see the city is from a horse-drawn carriage tour, of which there are many.
If you are the more ghoulish type, Savannah prides itself on the gothic undercurrent (as evidenced in the book, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil) and there are plenty of Ghost Tours for those with strong hearts!
The World Famous River St is where it all happens after sun down. Sit outside at one of the restaurants and watch the huge ships arrive in port. Then take a wander along the street - although you probably won't be able to manage a drink in every bar you pass!
If you're visiting the area in March be sure to stop in a see how they do St Patrick's Day in Savannah, it's the largest celebration in the South, and many say second only to New York's in terms of numbers!
