The proposed bid to redevelop the Holiday Inn Oceanfront, replacing it with condos, has another, more significant change attached - the removal of the Tiki Hut bar!
Currently the only place on the Island where you can (legally) drink alcohol on the beach, the Tiki Hut is as much a part of the tourism scene as the Sea Pines lighthouse, at least according to the members behind the new Save the Tiki Hut campaign.

An interesting overview of how Hilton Head has developed in the 50 years since Charles Fraser founded the Sea Pines Resort in USA Today:
“Often billed as the nation’s first environmentally sensitive, “eco-planned” resort, Hilton Head, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary throughout the summer, has grown exponentially in recent years. But in one respect — the environment — surprisingly little has changed”

Looks like the number of shark attacks for the year in Hilton Head has doubled this week.
The Beaufort Gazette has the story.

A fascinating article in Forbes magazine with great places to live cheaply, with Hilton Head being named as one of the ‘Telecommuting Heaven’ areas.
“Tourists inject more than a billion and a half dollars into the economy each year. The millions they pay in sales taxes build new bike paths, keep the beaches spotless and enrich local cultural offerings.” (read the whole thing >)

After being closed for almost nine months, Old Carolina Golf Club is due to open its doors again on August 1st.
Old Carolina closed back in the Fall of 2005 after financial difficulties, with developers wanting to use the land for housing instead. Many residents at Old Carolina were (understandably!) unhappy about this, having paid golf course prices for their homes, but a settlement has been agreed.
There is still no announcement about whether the new course will be a nine or ten hole course, and the website www.oldcarolinagolf.com has no news, but prices are to be a very reasonable $20 per round, including carts, for the Clyde Johnston designed course.

After a 7 year old girl was bitten by a shark yesterday, swimmers at Coligny Beach were seemingly unconcerned this morning, with the usual numbers of people playing in the water.
Fears of a ‘Jaws’-like situation coming in to the big summer season were laughed off by visitors.
The attack was the first since 2001, when a boy required more than thirty stitches after being bitten. There have only been 52 attacks in South Carolina since records began, and the last deadly attack was way back in 1883.
So, don’t worry, come on in, the water’s fine!

If Councilman John Safay is successful we could have seen an end to parking meters at Coligny Plaza, perhaps as soon as June 15th.
The proposal would see the town giving up $100,000 annually in revenue, but presumable that could be made up in increased business at Coligny Plaza.
Sounds like a good deal to us, although to be honest, there are never enough parking spaces near the beach already - not sure this will help tremendously. Your thoughts?

A great write up in Sunday’s Miami Herald about the new hipness of Hilton Head Island. Certainly makes us sound good:
Put on your strappy top and heels and head to Hilton Head Island, because it’s gotten hot — not hot-hot, but Paris Hilton-hot. Toss aside those images of preppie golfers in pink and green and sedate poolside drinks.
With visits from celebs such as Reese Witherspoon, John Travolta and Madonna, Hilton Head has a nightlife to bolster its new image.
