Hilton Head Airport is set to close for two weeks in June 2005, in a blow that could have a significant cost to the city according to the Chamber of Commerce.

The widening and resurfacing of the runway, using a $4 million dollar grant from the FAA, has been scheduled for the busy tourist season as the labor costs will be lower, but Piedmont Airlines which operates the flights to Hilton Head called the two week closing a ‘worst case scenario’ for them, costing as much as $400,000 in lost revenue. Such an amount could potentially ruin the small airline.

No date has been fixed yet for the work, but airport officials have publicly stated that they are listening to any and all concerns before announcing any final decision.
