Hilton Head Alligator

The biggest thing to state is, as Douglas Adams says, don't panic! There have only been 8 documented attacks in South Carolina in the last quarter century, and in each of those there was evidence of the 'gators having been fed previously. So, number one, don't feed the alligators!

Secondly, alligators are not tame. True, they are unlikely to attack a person, but use some basic common sense. Almost every local in Hilton Head has a horror tale of tourists posing toddlers next to the reptiles for photographs! It sounds crazy, but it happens all the time. Keep your distance.

Alligators are most active at dawn and dusk. Be aware when walking near lagoons or brackish water, and absolutely no swimming!

Do not let pets and small animals out alone, or walk them near lagoons. They are far more likely to be attacked than people.

Other things to remember:

Avoid water with thick vegetation around the shore, this is prime habitat for 'gators.

Be aware in mating season, May thru June, that the males become more aggressive.

If a gator does approach in a threatening manner, make as much noise and movement as possible. This should show the alligator that he has taken on more than he can handle and he'll back away.
